GateWeather

About GateWeather

GateWeather publishes next-day forecasts for airport cities and checks each one against what the airport measured. Every airport page shows its own record, hits and misses.

Who runs it

GateWeather is run by TODO: owner's name or company name, based in Denmark. TODO: legal entity, registration number (CVR) and postal address, if this is run as a business.

Questions, corrections and data requests: TODO-contact@ (address to be filled in before launch).

What this is

For each of over 300 airports we publish tomorrow's high and low with a likely range, the chances of rain, thunder, snow and fog, wind, humidity and cloud. The forecast starts from ECMWF's weather model and is corrected for each airport and combined with WT-1, a neural network we trained on hourly airport weather reports. How it works explains it, Compare shows how it scores next to ECMWF, NOAA and DWD forecasts, and Patterns shows what the reports reveal. The forecasts are also published as JSON at /api/v1/forecast.json, free during the preview; anyone passing on the numbers should show the lines in the feed's source.credits.

Times on the airport pages are local to the airport. The page's "Updated" time in the footer is UTC.

Disclaimer

Forecasts are statistical estimates for general information. They can be wrong, and the likely range is meant to hold the measured value only eight days in ten. They are not for aviation, navigation, flight planning or any decision where safety or property is at stake: use the official sources for that (for pilots, the airport's own METAR and TAF and the national meteorological service; for warnings, your national weather service). The site and the feeds are provided as they are, without any warranty, and we are not liable for decisions made from them. Nothing here is an official forecast of ECMWF, DWD, NOAA or any weather service, and none of them endorses it.

Data and credits

  • ECMWF. This service is based on data and products of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), source www.ecmwf.int, licensed under CC BY 4.0 (ECMWF's terms). Changes: we interpolate the open forecasts (IFS and AIFS) to each airport, correct their bias for that airport and combine them with our own model. The result is not ECMWF's own forecast and ECMWF does not endorse it.
  • Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). The MOSMIX comparison on Compare is based on data from Deutscher Wetterdienst (opendata.dwd.de), own elements added: we reduce its hourly forecasts to daily highs and lows. CC BY 4.0.
  • NOAA and the US National Weather Service. Airport weather reports (METAR) from the Aviation Weather Center, GFS and National Blend of Models forecasts, MOS guidance and NWS daily climate reports. US government data in the public domain. We present it as our own analysis, not as NOAA's or as official.
  • Iowa Environmental Mesonet (Iowa State University) for the archive of airport reports, MOS forecasts and climate reports. Public domain.
  • OurAirports for airport names and locations (public domain), Natural Earth for the map outline (public domain), and the time zone boundaries of timezone-boundary-builder through the timezonefinder library (ODbL, data from OpenStreetMap contributors) for each airport's time zone.
  • Fonts. Manrope (The Manrope Project Authors) and Hanken Grotesk (The Hanken Grotesk Project Authors), under the SIL Open Font Licence 1.1, served from this site.

Other forecasts on Compare are scored only against airport measurements; we do not use their own websites.
